The performance of the world’s farmers in field crop production seems to defy any claims of an agricultural disaster looming due to the many highlighted difficulties faced. The negative doomsayers highlight climate change, soil loss, desertification, weed infestation, disease spread, insect problems, such as loss of bees, and urban encroachment as factors that are reducing total agricultural potential.

This analysis looks at the actual facts as world total field crop production is continuing to increase despite a slowing in the increase of area harvested. Total world production of the crops outlined in this analysis is forecast to reach 3.224 billion tonnes (Bt) in 2019/20, a record level. Total production has been increasing at an average of 54 Mt annually for the last ten years.

Previous analyses have outlined the recent relative stability of total world area harvested at around 950 million hectares and the fact that there is still ample undeveloped country available for crop production if the profitability warrants its development. It has been the gradual improvement in world yields that has achieved the continuing record production results.
